Swap sugary drinks for fizzy water

Posted in Weight Loss Advice on 16th Sep, 2009

I am not ashamed to admit that I love sugary and fizzy drinks. I was never allowed fizzy drinks as a child, in fact, because my mother had been so insistent to our Brownie leader than we weren’t even allowed to drink squash, Brown Owl thought we were allergic to squash and cola! As we got older though, our Nan used to let us have ‘pop’ or lemonade and mum was no longer in a position to be draconian about us drinking anything but water. At the time, I thought mum was being a great, big meanie but as I’ve got older, I’ve come to understand that she was merely taking care of my teeth. I have her to thank that my twin sister and I are the only two 23 year olds I know with zero fillings. That’s right, I’ve only ever had braces to straighten a crooked tooth!

Sugary and fizzy drinks are not just bad for your teeth, they are bad for your health and your weight.

I can no longer drink diet coke as it contains aspartame and I become dizzy, nauseous and disorientated if I ingest it. Diet soft drinks have also been linked to osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) as they contain phosphates which is added to keep the bubbles where they’re meant to be!

But get this: a 500ml bottle of Cola contains 105 calories per HALF A BOTTLE. Most people drink the whole bottle in one day. So this 500ml bottle of cola contains 53g of sugar – 58% of your recommended daily allowance of sugar and 210 calories. OUCH!

But I love fizzy drinks, the bubbles are really refreshing! Here cometh the answer:

I lived in Germany for a short time and whilst I was there, I discovered the popularity of water ‘mit gas’ or ‘kohlensaure’. This is carbonated water to you and I. Kanye believe it?!  I was starting to save a huge amount of calories on a daily basis just by swapping sugary fizzy drinks to plain and simple carbonated water. Granted, this isn’t for everyone but I would advise adding a small amount of squash to jazz it up a bit if taste is an issue for you.

I also discovered, once back in the UK, that if you ask for ‘soda water’ at a pub you get fizzy water from the tap for free!

TIP: Swap sugary drinks like cola and lemonade for carbonated water as it has no calories and won’t rot your teeth.
