Liposuction to lose weight?

Will surgery really help you to lose weight?
Going under the knife seems like a drastic method to lose weight, after all, anaesthetic can be deadly and things could go wrong if you pick the wrong doctor…
Z-list celebrity Kerry Katona infamously put herself through thousands of pounds worth of cosmetic surgery to acheive her ideal body after having four children understandably took its toll.
The trouble with Kerry was that she wasn’t willing to put in the hard work to keep the weight off, so she piled on the lbs as her life continued to spiral out of control.
Are you thinking about liposuction?
There is no shame in turning to a surgeon for help when it comes to losing weight. If you have turned to diet and exercise and lost a lot of weight but the last few lbs are tough to shift then lipo really could be for you. The only problem is if you don’t change your diet and exercise programme accordingly, you are likely to put weight back on and waste your time and money.
There are two types of liposuction:
- There is a more aggressive form where a tube (called a cannula) is inserted into the fatty area and pushed in and out whilst a vacuum literally pumps out all the fat in the required area. This is done under a general anaesthetic and can be painful. Patients are required to wear structured underwear for a few weeks otherwise remaining fat could become lumpy and uneven.
- Tumescent Liposuction is much simpler and more for those who can’t shift stubborn pockets of fat. A solution is injected into the problem area and over time the fat dissolves. There are less side effects and the recovery time is considerably quicker than traditional liposuction.
Do I approve of people who choose liposuction as a weight loss method? I don’t approve of liposuction for people who need to lose a lot of weight and have not tried other options first, however, I am practical enough to understand that these treatments are available and are the right choice for some people.
Cosmetic treatments like this aren’t the easy way out as keeping the weight off is YOUR job, not the surgeon’s. If you are contemplating a treatment like liposuction, ask yourself the following questions first, the correct answer should be obvious:
- Can I achieve the same results without treatment?
- Is the doctor I’ve chosen fully qualified and experienced?
- Do I like and trust my doctor?
- Is this my decision or am I under pressure from someone else?
- What are the risks involved?
- How long until I can resume normal activities?
- Will I be reviewed after the treatment?
- Will I need pain relief?
- How frequently does the doctor I have chosen carry this procedure out?
- Will there be any added costs?
Well said, while it’s so tempting to think it’s easy to change yourself, could you really put yourself through the trauma of anaesthetic? which makes me very sick personally, and worse for other people.
What do you think about operations to remove loose skin after weight loss?
Louisa, this is an inner struggle I have. I have no temptation myself to undergo lipo or any other medical procedure to lose weight, and I have often found myself being critical of those who do, but I have to stop and realize I haven’t lived the life they have lived. It is easy for me to say they shouldn’t go that route, and it still goes against everything I believe, but if I haven’t lived their life, I try not to condemn them for the decision.
Hi Steve, a while ago a British TV presenter was ripped into by the media for not telling the world she’d had a gastric band fitted. As far as I was concerned, it was no one else’s business because gastric bands aren’t the easy way out either! You still have to exercise and watch what you eat as you need to make sure you’re getting all the right nutrients.
Anyway, I felt the need to highlight this as an issue for dieters because so many people really do contemplate surgery at some point during their weight loss journey. I’d like to discuss cosmetic treatments on Total Chunk in more detail as I think information available is currently rather biased!
When you truly believe something is wrong, it’s very hard to be tolerant so I’m glad you do try to be understanding.
And I’ve gone down two cup sizes since losing weight, I wish I’d lost weight everywhere else
I can not understand why people have liposuction to lose weight. Not only is it very expensive, but the dangers involved are just not worth the few pounds that you lose having it done.
I remember watching a program on TV, were a guy in America paid $4000 for liposuction. He wasn’t fat to begin with, but following his liposuction they removed a whopping 1.5 pounds of fat. So was it really worth the expense and pain to get it done.
I’ve really enjoyed reading your articles. You obviously know what you are talking about! Your site is so easy to navigate too, I’ve bookmarked it in my favourites
I usually don’t do commenting. however thanks for this nice post and trying forward to more.
Liposuction is not a solution to weight loss and not an alternative to dieting and exercise. However liposuction is often carried out by our patients who are not able to lose the fatty deposits that build up over the years and depending on your body and metabolism, sometimes no amount of exercise will solve this. It merely offers women the chance to feel better and more confident with their body and its shape.
Liposuction is actually a major surgery. It requires general anesthesia and a recovery period. Up to ten pounds of fat is removed at one time costing the patient between $4,000 and $10,000. The fat cells are literally sucked out of the body. Swelling and pain are common side effects often require time off work.
‘Texas breast reduction’, I don’t think you’ve read the article properly.
I mentioned tumescent lipo which is a non-surgical option that involves injections of a solution to dissolve small pockets of fat. This is not a weight loss solution OBVIOUSLY, it is a shaping procedure.
However you are right about traditional liposuction as I hear it hurts a lot. I don’t qualify for traditional liposuction as I’m technically not big enough but I’d definitely be interested in trying tumescent lipo to help reduce my thighs.
If you’re still on the fence: grab your magazine and make an appointment to see a cosmetic dermatologist soon to see which laser technique sounds better to you, and which makes your face glow more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
Liposuction maybe effective in trimming down fats but i like to loss weight without surgery.~;`
